ISLAMIC FINANCEThe unprecedented surge of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR4.0) has brought many problems and challenges; nevertheless, it also brings unlimited potentials that can be utilised in the Islamic financial sector.

Thus, to further enlighten us on the technological advancement and innovation that can be utilised in the financial sector, particularly the Islamic finance, the Islamic Business School (IBS) has organised a talk by the Adjunct Professor of IBS, Datuk Prof. Dr. Mohd Daud Bakar, entitled "Islamic Finance Technology and Innovation". The event was held at the Seminar Hall, Islamic Centre UUM.

Datuk Prof. Dr. Mohd Daud explained that, the world is dealing with more advanced technology and innovation compared to the existing technology such as the email, fax or internet system.

"IR4.0 via smart communication, introduces us to a new asset known as "data". Big Data, Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and robotics are the main components of IR4.0. These components should be applied in Islamic finance if we want to ensure that Islamic finance industry is not left in the dust and this will also help to us to produce cheaper, smarter, easier and faster products," he added.

According to Datuk Prof. Dr. Mohd Daud, who is also the Chairman of Amanie Group and the Chairman of the Shariah Advisory Council, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), the evolution of technology in finance began with the digitization of customer data.

"When the financial sector transforms the customers' data into the digital form, this act marks the beginning of technological advancement in the financial industry. The digitization of all things is crucial, given that we can set the algorithms to operate like small robots to verify data quickly, accurately and it is certainly inexpensive. This provides us with a solid basis to improve our risk management, check bankruptcy status of individuals and many more.

"Robotic technology will take over human labour in IR4.0 but human still play an important part in this development since we are the one who will develop and formulate the algorithms to be programmed into the robotic system," he said.

Datuk Prof. Dr. Mohd Daud also touched on the recent developments in financial industries including blockchain, cryptocurrency, smart contract, Initial Coin Offering (ICO) and fintech.

Also present during the talk were the Dean of IBS, Prof. Dr. Asmadi Mohamed Naim, lecturers and UUM students.

epas awardThe Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz School of Accountancy, Universiti Utara Malaysia (TISSA-UUM) once again did UUM and the nation proud when two programmes offered at the School were awarded the EFMD Programme Accreditation System (EPAS) from the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), an international non-profit organisation based in Brussels, Belgium.

This achievement has made the Accounting programme offered by TISSA-UUM as the first and only programme in Malaysia to receive the coveted EPAS accreditation.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Ahmad Bashawir Abdul Ghani said this accreditation was awarded to two programmes namely Bachelor of Accountancy with Honours [B. Acct. (Hons.)] and Bachelor of Accountancy (Information Systems) with Honours [B.Acct. (IS) (Hons.)].

"The assessment carried out by EPAS has approved both programmes for the three-year accreditation, thereby endorsing TISSA-UUM's ability to design and produce highly competitive future human capital internationally," he said.

He added that the EPAS evaluation process was in-depth and involved rigorous assessment factors including course design process; objectives and learning outcomes; curriculum content; balance between international focus, academic theory and experiential learning; funds allocated by institutions to support programmes; quality of faculty and industry involvement and alumni.

Based on the confidence that EFMD has for TISSA-UUM and the AACSB accreditation previously obtained indicate that the quality of education achieved by TISSA-UUM is enriched by students, faculty, staff and alumni.

anaksarawakDr. Aidi Ahmi from UUM was named the recipient of the 9th "Anak Sarawak" Appreciation Award for his contributions and excellence in conjunction with Tribal Meet (TriBE) 2018 in Kuching, Sarawak.

The success of the Director of the Institute for Strategic and Sustainable Accounting Development (ISSAD), Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz School of Accountancy (TISSA-UUM) was indeed a significant achievement.

"This success is not only for me but also for the institute that I lead and this is a very prestigious award which is only awarded once a year by the Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) and the Sarawak State Government," he said.

According to him, the award was not just awarded to Sarawakians but also for non-Sarawakians both at national and international levels.

"Actually, I do not expect to win because the shortlisted candidates involved are equally if not better and most of them are directly involved with industrial management," he said.

Commenting further on his contributions, he was involved with several events such as organizing a conference in Sarawak which was financially supported mainly by the SCB.

"The support provided by SCB is a great opportunity for the university and other conference organizers and should be shared for mutual benefit.

Dr. Aidi took the initiative to share SCB services by conducting presentations from 2016 – 2018, apart from successfully organizing three events in Sarawak and opening up business opportunities to the state of Sarawak.

At the SCB organised event, besides Dr. Aidi Ahmi (Universiti Utara Malaysia), Mr. Ahmad Zaiwin Mohd Kassim (Sarawak's Innovative Youth Pro Youth Cooperative) was also announced as the winner of the Excellent Achievement Award while Mr. Eric van Piggelen (Borneo Kuching Convention Centre) was awarded the Grand Winner of the same award.

At the ceremony which was officiated by the Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Abang Haji Openg, the winners received a marketing and training grant of amounting to MYR10,000 and MYR20,000 respectively for the Grand Prize Winner of the Outstanding Achievement Award.

aacb dayUUM AACSB Day berjaya menyuntik kesedaran staf UUM terhadap kepentingan The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) yang berlangsung di Foyer Pusat Pengajian Pengurusan Perniagaan (SBM), semalam.
